Psalm 44: 1-8, 20-21, 26

1  We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.

2  With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish.

3  It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

4  You are my King and my God, who decrees [c]  victories for Jacob.

5  Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.

6  I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;

7  but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

8  In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever

20  If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,

21  would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?

26  Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.

Prayer

Father in Heaven,

We praise You for your mercy and everlasting love. Thank you for the breath of fresh air that revives our spirit. We raise up the banner of the cross proclaiming that in heaven we have only you, and on this earth, You are all we want. Our health may fail, and our spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of our hearts; He is ours forever. Thank you for the gift of peace. In Christ, we are victorious.

Lord Jesus, You have conquered death for believers. With Your precious blood You cleanse our sins and forgive our foolish pride. We ponder the question why bad things are happening to us. We have worked hard to make a living, have not disobeyed the laws of God, have not been dishonest, and have not strayed off the path of righteousness. Yet, we have been reeling under the raging coronavirus pandemic for months and coping with the stress and challenges the pandemic causes. We are feeling self-pity for ourselves.

Holy Spirit, thank you for sending forth Your light and Your truth to guide us through these difficult times. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. We put no trust in our bows, and our swords do not bring us victory. There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord, because victory rests with the Lord. Fuel our hope and faith in the Lord knowing that the pandemic will pass. Today’s suffering is not the end of the story. Our hardship is not in vain in the Lord, there is a purpose that can be derived from it. If we don’t give up, our struggle will be our testimony about the goodness of God to the next generation.

We confess our sins to one another and pray for one another in Jesus’ name. Amen
