Streams in the Desert  Feb 2
Lessons in the Shadow / Meyer
"In the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft: in his quiver hath he hid me" (Isa. 49:2).

Today's Scripture & Insight:
Isaiah 49:1-10
1 Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the LORD called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.2 He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver.3 He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.”4 But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing at all. Yet what is due me is in the LORD’s hand, and my reward is with my God.”
5 And now the LORD says— he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him
and gather Israel to himself, for I am[a] honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength —  6  he says:“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant  to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”7 This is what the LORD says — the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel — to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers:“Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”
8 This is what the LORD says:“In the time of my favor I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances,9 to say to the captives, ‘Come out,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!’“They will feed beside the roads  and find pasture on every barren hill. 10 They will neither hunger nor thirst,  nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them  and lead them beside springs of water.

"In the shadow." We must all go there sometimes. The glare of the daylight is too brilliant; our eyes become injured, and unable to discern the delicate shades of color, or appreciate neutral tints--the shadowed chamber of sickness, the shadowed house of mourning, the shadowed life from which the sunlight has gone.
But fear not! It is the shadow of God's hand. He is leading thee. There are lessons that can be learned only there.
The photograph of His face can only be fixed in the dark chamber. But do not suppose that He has cast thee aside. Thou art still in His quiver; He has not flung thee away as a worthless thing.
He is only keeping thee close till the moment comes when He can send thee most swiftly and surely on some errand in which He will be glorified. Oh, shadowed, solitary ones, remember how closely the quiver is bound to the warrior, within easy reach of the hand, and guarded jealously. --Christ in Isaiah, Meyer
In some spheres the shadow condition is the condition of greatest growth. The beautiful Indian corn never grows more rapidly than in the shadow of a warm summer night. The sun curls the leaves in the sultry noon light, but they quickly unfold, if a cloud slips over the sky. There is a service in the shadow that is not in the shine. The world of stellar beauty is never seen at its best till the shadows of night slip over the sky. There are beauties that bloom in the shade that will not bloom in the sun. There is much greenery in lands of fog and clouds and shadow. The florist has "evening glories" now, as well as "morning glories." The "evening glory" will not shine in the noon's splendor, but comes to its best as the shadows of evening deepen.

Today’s Hymns:
Rock of Ages

He hideth my soul

Scripture to Respond:
Psalm 91:1-3
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,  my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you  from the fowler’s snare  and from the deadly pestilence.
Psalm 32:7
You are my hiding place;  you will protect me from trouble  and surround me with songs of deliverance.

Reflection:
When God hides us temporarily in the shadowed chamber of sickness, the shadowed house of mourning and the shadowed life from which the sunlight has gone, will you doubt if God has cast you aside?
Will you firmly believe you are still in His quiver? When you know that God treasures and loves you so much that he hides you in the shadow of His hand, how are you going to give your thanks?

Prayer:
Thank you, Lord, for your reminder, which prevents me from falling into the snare of doubting You. However unfavourable the circumstances are and however low my self-confidence is, I will firmly believe that I am still loved by You in the shadow of Your hand and that I can still serve You properly.
