西伯利亞(Siberia)的烏揚迪那河岸(the bank of the Uyandina River)的永凍層(permafrost)發現了兩頭已絕種的歐亞幼年穴獅(Eurasian cave lion cub)。在2015 年夏天,河岸一帶發生了洪水和山崩使得一個冰透鏡體(ice lens)露出來,人們看到當中藏著兩頭幼獅遺骸。據說這兩頭幼獅死亡時僅一、兩周大,因為牠們的乳牙尚未長出,而體型則如成年的家貓般。
奇妙地保存下來
亞科申科學院(Yakutian Academy of Sciences)猛獁象動物群研究系主任艾爾伯特.普洛托波波夫(Albert Protopopov) 博士說: 「這個無疑是一個非常轟動的發現, 所有幼獅的身體器官,包括皮、耳、軟組織,甚至胡子等,都保存完整。」他聲稱牠們是世上罕見歷史上發現過最完整的穴獅遺骸。科學院提出:「牠們也許是在山崩發生時,被活埋於洞穴中,之後這個地點沒有遭受到任何風吹日曬,這是我們怎樣解釋這動物得以極好地保存下來的原因。」1 一個韓國科研小組已經從其中一個保存完好的幼獅軀體上抽取樣本,以期待對該動物進行生命複製(cloning)。2
